fISHES IN Jim Corbett NATIONAL PARK

Many freshwater fish species live in the rivers of Jim Corbett National Park. Because of the mild temperature, low gradient, abundance of deep pools, boulders, and gravel on stream banks, and minor pollution, the Ramganga, Palain, Sonanadi, Kosi, and Mandal rivers provide critical habitat and spawning grounds for them. Many essential species rely on fish for survival, including gharial, otters, fish-eagles, kingfishers, ospreys, storks, fish-owls, egrets, darters, and pelicans.

The Golden Mahseer (Tor putitora), a huge freshwater river fish belonging to the carp family, is the most famous of the fishes found in and surrounding Jim Corbett National Park. It has a stunning look, with a sap green body and vivid orange scales. Mahseer is regarded as one of the most valuable fish among fishermen worldwide.

The Ramganga is one of India’s best-preserved mahseer rivers. Goonch (Bagarius bagarius), Indian trout (Barilius bola), and Rohu are other major fish species found in Jim Corbett National Park (Labeo rohita). Conservation species like mahseer benefit from sustainable angling as opposed to intense fishing. Angling and fishing are permitted in select sites inside Jim Corbett National Park after obtaining licences from the Forest Department.
