About the Temple
Pariyanampetta Bhagavathy Temple is dedicated to Goddess Bhagavathy (Goddess of the 14 Desams), who is an incarnation of Maa Durga. It is one of the popular ancient temples of South India. It is a rare sight of having glimpses of various performances during Pariyanampetta Pooram which keep the cultural integrity of the state intact.
- Tholpavakoothu: A noteworthy program which everyone enjoys during the night time is the folk-art form Tholpavakoothu (Shadow Puppetry), which is a beautiful traditional art form of Kerala. Selected verses from the famous Tamil Epic ‘Kamba Ramayana’ are used in the puppet plays. People get engrossed to see the colourful puppets and their antics, displaying ancient religious stories.
- The Devine Procession of Elephants: The ending of Pariyanampetta Pooram is with the taking out of procession of beautifully decked-up elephants, around 21 in number. The ceremonial procession of 21 elephants starts in the early morning from the temple complex with traditional musical instruments of Kerala playing at the background. The elephants move around in the entire region and streets are lined up with crowd of people, offering their homage to elephants and watching the procession passing by. People also get to see folk art designs being drawn like as (bull effigy) and Kuthiravela (horse effigy). At dusk, the procession of 21 elephants come back to the temple complex, prasadam is offered to the devotees and visitors, and this culminates Pariyanampetta Pooram.
