his flute. Mathura, a little town on the River
Yamuna was transformed into a place of faith
after Lord Krishna was born here. Vrindavan,
a village - once noted for its fragrant groves,
is where he spent an eventful youth. There
are numerous other little spots in the area
that still reverberate with the enchantment
of Sri Krishna.
Overnight: Agra – Taj View Hotel or
similar (2 nights)
Day 12: Agra (B, D)
After breakfast visit the famous Taj Mahal.
The Taj Mahal is an extravagant marble monument
of love, built by Emperor Shah Jahan in 1653
as a memorial to his queen Mumtaz Mahal. This
beautiful mausoleum in pure white marble took
22 years and 22000 craftsmen to build. Continue
your tour to the Agra Fort, the original red
sandstone fort built by Moghul Emperor Akbar
in 1565. The Forts maze of courtyards, its
marble mosque and lavish private chambers
reflect the grandeur of the Mughal Empire.
The Fort reveals the Mughal talent for combining
defensive architecture with beauty and design.
This fort palace was begun by Akbar as a purely
defensive citadel and was subsequently completed
by two successive generations that added the
delicate mosaic and magnificent marble palaces.
The fort is the history of Mughal life in
Agra and offers a magical view of the Taj
Mahal. Afternoon free for independent activities
Day 13: Agra/Jaipur via Fatehpur Sikri (B,
D)
After breakfast, depart by road for Agra.
On the highway between Agra & Jaipur is
the deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri. This
is one of the world’s most perfect ghost
cities and a marvel of design and construction.
It was conceived and built by Mughal Emperor
Akbar, one of the most enlightened rulers
of his time. Built in 1571, it is a synthesis
of the flourishing styles of the Persian courts
and the prevailing Hindu Islamic trends. Today
its pristine red sandstone buildings are as
perfect as they were when they were first
chiseled. The masterpiece of this remarkable
monument is the Jewel House of Diwan I Khas.
Architecturally extraordinary, the four doorways
lead into a single storey room where a huge
central pillar carved to baroque richness,
supports a seat reached by mid air walkways.
Continue your drive to Jaipur and check-in
at hotel. This picturesque city is a symphony
in pink, a color that signifies hospitality
in Rajput culture. Built by Raja Jai Singh
in the 18th century, it is surrounded by hills
topped with rugged fortresses and dotted with
fairy tale palaces. Ambling camels and brightly
dressed locals reflect Jaipur’s desert
heritage, while the teeming markets display
a profusion of handlooms and crafts.
Overnight: Jaipur – Country Inn &
Suites or similar (2 nights)
Day 14: Jaipur - HAPPY DIWALI! (B, D)
After breakfast enjoy an excursion to Amber
Fort where you will have an elephant ride!
As you take the winding road from modern Jaipur
between the barren hills immediately to the
north there is a little hint of the magnificent
fort and palace, which once dominated the
narrow valley. Amber was the site of a Hindu
temple built by the Mina tribes as early as
the 10th century. Afternoon visit to Hawa
Mahal (Palace of Winds), City Palace, Observatory
and time for shopping.
This evening we’ll take you into the
city to celebrate Diwali! Diwali is the day
when King Rama's coronation was celebrated
in Ayodhya after his epic war with Ravana,
the demon king of Lanka. By order of the royal
families of Ayodhya and Mithila, the kingdom
of which Sita was princess, the cities and
far-flung boundaries of these kingdoms were
lit up with rows of lamps, glittering on dark
nights to welcome home the divine king Rama
and his queen Sita after 14 years of exile,
ending with an across-the-seas war in which
the whole of the kingdom of Lanka was destroyed.
On Diwali day, the local homes are decorated,
sweets are distributed, and thousands of lamps
are lit to create a world of fantasy. Of all
the festivals celebrated in India, Diwali
is by far the most glamorous and important.
Enthusiastically enjoyed by people of every
religion, its magical and radiant touch creates
an atmosphere of joy and festivity. Diwali
celebrations in India are similar to Christmas
celebrations in the west. You will get a chance
to celebrate Diwali, burn crackers and drive
pass the colorful and lit city of Jaipur in
the evening.
